According to this, Derpy is apparently an official character now. Probably not a mane one but possibly a pony with more significant appearence throughout the series.

So Derpy is official, and she probably gets her own animations and stuff instead of generic background pony #27. This pleases me greatly, I'd love to see her own little quirks and overall personality come out more. As long as she stays in the background, of course.
